FLEx Session 3 - List, Affixes, Variants, Complex forms

 

Opening FLEx

There are lots of tools for studying, recording, verifying (parser) morphology.

  • Start FLEx and open Simple project

Field Visibility

  • Open Simple Project
  • Go to cat entry.
  • In Definition field, change Visibility to Normally hidden, unless non-empty.
  • In Definition field, change Visibility to Normally hidden.
  • Set Show Hidden Files. In Definition field, change Visibility to Always Visible. Clear Show Hidden Files.

Have the participants change visibility of Date Modified.

Lists

  • Open Simple Project
  • Create a new entry: car - automobile - noun.
  • Set Show Hidden Files. Change Status to Always Visible. Clear Show Hidden Files.
  • In the edit pane, click Status. Click ellipsis button.

The Choose Sense Status dialog box appears.

  • Select Tentative and click OK.
  • Go to next entry.
  • In the edit pane, click Status. Click ellipsis button.

The Choose Sense Status dialog box appears.

  • Click Edit the Sense Status List.
  • Create a new entry: Unlikely - Unl.
  • In the Edit pane, click Status. Click ellipsis button.

The Choose Sense Status dialog box appears.

  • Select Unlikely. Click OK.
  • In the Lists area, click Sense Status.

Explain the List area.

  • Click Lexicon.

Status has been update

Have participants change the status of a few entries.

Affixes

  • On the Insert menu, click New Entry.

The New Entry dialog box appears.

  • In the Lexeme box, type -s.

Note the morpheme type changes as we type.

  • In the Affix Type box: Select Inflectional.

In the Attaches to Category box, select Noun.

Click Gloss Builder to indicate plural.

Click Create.

  • On the Insert menu, click New Entry.

The New Entry dialog box appears.

  • In the Lexeme box, type -s.

Note the morpheme type changes as we type.

  • In the Affix Type box: Select Inflectional.

In the Attaches to Category box, select Verb.

Click Gloss Builder to indicate third person singular.

Click Create.

Have the participants add affix -ed. (past tense)

Have the participants add affix -ly. (adjective to adverb). This is derivational

  • Go to -s entry (noun).
  • On the Insert menu, click Allomorph.
  • Add allomorph -es.
  • Go to -s entry. In the Environment box, type -es \x_#. (e.g. foxes)

Have the participants add allomorph -t to -ed. (e.g. built)

Variants

Irregular inflections e.g. 'broke' go into the lexicon too. In FLEx as own entry, link to 'break'.

  • Create a new entry: broke - break (pst) - verb.
  • Go to break entry. In the Insert menu, click Variant. Select broke and click OK. Set Variant Type = Irregularly Inflected Form. Set Show Minor Entry.
  • Create a new entry: speak - talk - verb.
  • Create a new entry: spoke - speak (pst) - verb with Varient Form = break, Variant Type = Irregularly Inflected Form.

Have the participants add thought as inflected form for think.

Have the participants add go and went as entries. (irregularly Inflected form)

Gray and grey are dialectic variants.

  • Create a new entry: gray - black white - adjective.
  • Create a new entry: grey - black white- adjective
  • Go to gray entry. In the Insert menu, click Variant. Select grey and click OK. Set Variant Type = Dialectal Variant.

Have the participants add color and colour as a variant form for color.

You can delete the sense in the variant entry.

  • Go to an appropriate entry. Click blue arrow for Sense 1 and click Delete this sense.

Do not show an entry in the dictionary.

  • Display dictionary (In the View menu, point to Lexicon and click Dictionary).
  • Click Lexicon Edit.
  • Set Show Hidden Fields. Click blue arrow for Exclude as Headword and point to Field Visibility and click Always Visible.

Reset Show Hidden Fields.

  • Go to spoke entry. Set Exclude As Headword.
  • Go to grey entry. Set Exclude As Headword.
  • Display Dictionary.

Complex forms

Complex forms are forms which contain more than one morpheme, such as derivatives, compound words, idioms, etc.

  • Create a new entry: -er - makes noun - Verb > Noun
  • Create a new entry: kick - strike with foot - Verb
  • Create a new entry: kicker - stem - person who kicks - noun with Complex Form Type = derivative

Set components to kick and -er.

  • Create a new entry: piggy bank - small container for coins - noun with Entry Type = compound.
  • Create a new entry: true blue - loyal - adjective with Entry Type = idiom

Have the participants add heater (makes hot) and strainer (sieve) as derive forms.

Have the participants add blackboard as a compound form.

Have the participants add priceless as a derived form

Have the participants add wet blanket as an idiom.
