Using the Exegetical Guide

The Exegetical Guide is a resource for viewing the Bible in the original languages, Hebrew and Greek. The guide provides Hebrew and Greek definitions for words in your biblical passage based on Greek and Hebrew dictionaries.

To open the Exegetical Guide, click on the menu, Guides, at the top of the Logos Bible Software application. Then select Exegetical Guide.

As an example, assume that you want to gather exegetical information about Mark 6:30-44, where Jesus feeds five thousand people. Enter Mark 6:30-44 into the Reference window. Then you can either hit the enter key on your keyboard, or click the search arrow, BasicSearch RightArrow  , to do the search. Then click on Layouts on the right side of the Toolbar, and choose the layout for 1 Tile to make the Exegetical Guide fill the whole window in the Logos Bible Software application. Here is an example of what you might see:

Results will be generated for sections that contain information for the given reference. Sections that contain no information for the given passage will be gray, and will say “no results”. When you move the cursor over any of the given items, the row turns blue, as follows:

If you click on the “X” on the right side of the row, this item will be removed from this display of the Exegetical Guide.

If you want to add other sections, click on “Add” at the upper-right of the report, and select the sections that are bold.

In this case, the Exegetical Guide includes the following default sections for the given passage.

JESUS FEEDS THE FIVE THOUSAND (MARK 6:30-44)

In this case, if you select, Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand, you have the option of giving a Title and Description for this guide.

When you click on the passage, MARK 6:30-44, a new tab opens to show you the analysis of the Greek words underlying the passage. This is what it looks like for Mark 6:30-44:

APPARATUSES

This section includes links to a critical apparatus, such as “Biblia Sacra Vulgata”. These resources point out differences in original language manuscripts and Bible translations. In this case, there is a link to “Biblia Sacra Vulgata”.

This section includes links to the Logos syntactical database. An example of a visualization is “The Lexham Discourse Greek New Testament”, a resource that helps a user to understand the original Greek words used in the New Testament.

WORD BY WORD

This section includes definitions of the original Hebrew and Greek words in your passage. It also includes links to how to pronounce the words, and links to dictionaries and lexicons. In this case, each of the single verses within the passage "Mark 6:30-44" is shown in "The English-Greek Reverse Interlinear New Testament" and into the English translation "New International Version (2011)".

BIBLICAL EVENTS

This section includes links to events related to the given topic. For the passage, Mark 6:30-44, cross references are listed for the event Jesus feeds the 5000.

BIBLICAL PEOPLE

This section includes links to the resource, “Treasury of Scripture Knowledge”, that relate to the passage you are studying. For the passage, Mark 6:30-44, some of the related passages include Luke 9:10, John 6:7, Matthew 9:36, and other passages.

GRAMMARS

This may be empty when you start using Logos Bible Software. But if you add grammar resources to your library, this item will be enabled and will list these resources.

HANDOUT

This makes a preview of a document containing interesting information related to your passage. Click “Edit” to open and edit the document. You can print this document.
