- Studying English Words Using the Bible Word Study Guide
The Bible Word Study Guide helps you to find information about a specific word. In this case, we will look for information on an English word. If you want to learn about a Hebrew or Greek word, see the module, “Studying Hebrew and Greek Words Using the Bible Word Study Guide”.
Open the Bible Word Study Guide by clicking on the menu, Guides, at the top of the Logos Bible Software application. Then select Bible Word Study.
As an example, assume that you want to find information on the word “faith”. Enter the word faith into the Reference window. Then you can either press the enter key on your keyboard, or click the search arrow, , to do the search. Then click on Layouts on the right side of the Toolbar, and choose the layout for 1 Tile to make the Bible Word Study fill the whole window in the Logos Bible Software application. Here is an example of what you may see:
To search within a specific range of passages, click on All Passages and choose from the drop-down list, which will include ranges that you have defined. To define a custom range:
-
Click on All Passages and type a range in the New reference range field. For example, type “Matt-John” (without the quotes).
-
Type a name for the custom range in the Title field. For example, type “Gospels” (without the quotes). (Note: If the name matches another custom range title, a “(2)” will be added to the end of the title).
-
Click the Save button.
The Bible Word Study Guide includes the following default sections for the word, faith.
FAITH
This section lets you provide a title and description for your word study.
DEFINITION (TOPIC)
The section title DEFINITION or TOPIC appears, depending on your version of Logos Bible Software.
This section provides a definition for the word, “faith”, as shown here.
Click on Faith (in blue letters) to open the resource, “The New Bible Dictionary”, to the word “faith”. The definition contains several pages of information on the word as it is used both in the Old Testament and the New Testament.
You can click on “Faith” or “Faithfulness”, following the phrase, “Topic Guide”, to open the Topic Guide to the specific word. This guide helps you find related Bible verses that use the word, and illustrations for the word “Faith” or “Faithfulness”. See the page, “Using the Topic Guide”, for more information on how to use this guide.
Click on the word “Faith”, following “Sermon Starter Guide”, to open the Sermon Starter Guide to the word, “Faith”. This guide lists Bible passages for the word, preaching resources (if it is available), thematic outlines, and collections for the word, “Faith”. See the page, “Using the Sermon Starter Guide”, for more information on how to use this guide.
HEBREW WORDS
This link generates a graph of Hebrew words that are translated into the English word being studied, which in this case is the word “faith”. A ring or circle is generated around the word faith, as shown here:
Each piece of the ring represents one of the several Hebrew words which have been translated into the English word “faith”. Click on one of the root words or ring slices to generate a concordance of all the occurrences of that word.
GREEK WORDS
This link generates a graph of Greek words that are translated into the English word being studied, which in this case is the word “faith”. A ring or circle is generated around the word faith, as shown here:
Each piece of the ring represents one of the several Greek words which have been translated into the English word “faith”. Click on one of the root words or ring slices to generate a concordance of all the occurrences of that word.
PHRASES
This link lists any phrases containing the word as generated by the Bible Word Study Guide. For the word “faith”, this leads you to the phases “fight of faith” and “measure of faith”, as shown here:
When you click on one of the English phrases, for example “fight of faith”, a Bible Search is done on the phrase. You can also open a Topic Guide on the English translation of the Greek phrase.
TEXTUAL SEARCHES
Finally, the Bible Word Study Guide collects phrases that use the word “faith” from bibles that are contained in your Logos library. Here is an example:
When you click on the title of a Bible, a list is generated that contains the Bible verses that use the word “faith”.
